President Donald Trump will donate $500,000 to help the families of African American and other minority people impacted by the deadly tornado in Louisiana, his office announced Tuesday.
Trump, who has been under fire for his remarks about the tragedy, will give the money to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a national advocacy group focused on racial equality.
The president will also donate $50,000 from his charitable foundation to the Salvation Army of Greater Houston, which provides food to black and Hispanic families in the area, the president’s office said in a statement.
The donations are the latest in Trump’s efforts to make charitable contributions a priority, as the White House faces mounting pressure to step up its efforts to help communities affected by the storm.
He also pledged to spend $5 million on hurricane relief efforts, and will donate the remaining $5.5 million to the Red Cross.
